Precision Optics Optical Prism

Optical Prisms

An optical prism is a transparent solid object with flat, polished surfaces that refract or bend light as it passes through. The amount of bending depends on the angle at which the light hits the surface and the refractive index of the material. Prisms are used in a variety of applications, such as in binoculars, cameras, and telescopes to refract and focus light, in spectroscopy to separate white light into its component colors, and in surveying to measure angles. They are also used in optical communication systems, such as fiber optics, to manipulate and transmit light signals.

  • Right Angle Prism (PRA)

Right Angle Prism, also known as image reflection/reflecting prism, is used to bend an input beam by 90° or 180° depending upon the entrance face. Two right-angled prisms when placed together are suitable for beam displacement applications.

  • Penta Prism (PPN)

A five-sided prism, Penta Prism has two reflective sides and is used to deviate a beam at the right angle without inverting or reversing the image. The 90° deviating angle does not change even if the prism is slightly adjusted. Hence, it is applicable in aligning the beam, laser leveling, and optical tooling.

  • Beam Splitter Penta Prism (PBP)

Beam splitter Penta Prism forms by combining a Penta Prism and wedge on one reflective surface and by beamsplitter coating on a cemented surface. We have different T/R ratio options available.

  • Anamorphic Prism (PAM)

A Prism which is used to magnify the beam in one dimension is called an Anamorphic Prism.  It is mainly used in transforming the elliptical beam profile of laser diode into a circular one.

  • Roof Prism (PRF)

The reserving or inverting of an image is done by a Roof Prism. Suitable for the applications where an inverted image from an object or turning the image side is desirable.

  • Dove Prism (PDV)

Dove Prisms are popularly known for rotating images. These are mostly used with a collimated beam for better performance. The image is rotated twice the angle of the prism when the rotation is around a longitudinal axis of the prism.

  • Corner Cube Retroreflector

Corner Cube Retroreflector is insensitive to the incident angle and follows the principle of total internal reflection. This retroreflector reflects the light back into the source even in the long distances. It is convenient to use in applications where an optical mirror is unsatisfactory.

FAQ

An optical prism is a transparent optic with flat, polished surfaces with at least one angled surface. Depending on the structure and material, it can be used to disperse, reflect, split, polarize, or depolarize the incoming light. Prisms are widely used in industry, military, and in scientific experiments, as well as in some optical devices such as binoculars, cameras, and spectrometers.
